Darwins First Youth Prom

The red carpet is rolled, the stage lights are set and the location is on the low down.

On Friday 13th, 2025 Darwin held its first Youth Prom in a secret location to the public, attendees aged 15 - 26 attended.

Surrounded by allies and more senior members of the community the young people danced, strutted, sang and enjoyed each others company. Sash's were handed out, youth performances took place, makeup was applied and a beautiful sense of community was created in a space for young people who don't always feel like they belong.

The event was brought together by Kesh & Jules. Two fabulous young people from Darwin who had attended a school function together being the only queer couple, and felt like outsiders. So, aligned with Darwin pride week they created their own event.

It was a sea of smiles, rainbow flags and sense of belonging.

I had the ability to participate as DJ on the night, taking young peoples requests.

Everything from Chappell Roan, Girl in Red to Tina Turners 'Nutbush'.

It was a truely joyful time, and a fantastic learning tool for Kesh & Jules who will no doubt be leaders in future queer events.
